Alice Mahoney: From Soft Ruins
Alice Mahoney presents From Soft Ruins, a series of monoprints and small sculptural objects. Originally made as part of her 2025 exhibition Soft Ruins, the monoprints feature hairy, drippy, lozenge-shaped forms that hover between abstraction and something more bodily or animal, exploring landscape, material and the body.
The small sculptural objects share something of the strange, blobby and drippy quality of the forms within the prints. They have emerged through the process of making other sculptures, using clay removed while hollowing out larger forms, which is then worked and burnished once the material has become too dry to use in a conventional way. Mahoney reworks this material, allowing these smaller forms to develop through play, handling and experimentation.
Alice Mahoney is a Cornwall-based multidisciplinary artist working across sculpture, ceramics, sound, film, painting and printmaking. Her practice explores the material, ecological and affective dimensions of landscape, with a particular interest in post-industrial environments, local folklore and embodied experiences of place. Her work is process-led and experimental, often incorporating unconventional and repurposed materials. Through playful approaches to making, Mahoney allows materials, chance and unexpected outcomes to shape the direction of the work.
