Lavender Menace is a photographic series exploring the queer body within the natural landscape in parallel to the history of coding and activism within queer culture. The term ‘Lavender Menace’ originated as a negative term for lesbians within the feminist movement, but it was later reclaimed as a positive term by lesbians who protested their exclusion. This act of protest and defiance further associated lavender with dyke power and resistance. Throughout lesbian history and experience the glimpse of a coded piece of clothing has been vital in order to see each other and make connections. The coded associations with colour, plants and clothing is mirrored within this photographic series which centres on a figure obscured by lavender with abstracted glimpses of denim jacket and cherry doc marten boots often worn by butch dykes. SHARP is based in Newlyn and has recently exhibited in The Drafts, Devonshire Collective Eastbourne, On Queer Ground, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Ultraviolet Soho London, Plant Dreaming Leeds Art Gallery, Back in the Pink Bradford City of Culture, FLAMM arts festival Bodmin, Mirrors: Reflecting on Identity, Falmouth Art Gallery. Cartographies of Care: Women/Land/Art Southcombe Barn, She Sells Seashells, Alice Austin House Staten Island New York.
